The scientific evidence for Compassion – and why compassion is vital for your career.

This talk will delve into the neuroscience of compassion, explain what it is, how it differs from empathy, debunk some of the myths around it and explain why it is so vital for patients, doctors and the health system as a whole.

 

Then the speaker will review the scientific evidence for compassion as it affects patient outcomes, its effect on staff and burnout (highly protective) and finally on the health system itself.

 

Finally, we’ll look at ways to increase compassion in the workplace, and in day to day life, and detail the latest evidence that shows that this should increase your happiness, your health, make you more successful and live longer!

Biography

Jules Willcocks is an ED Consultant in Alice Springs. He has a strong interest in education, mentoring, wellbeing and how this impacts trainees in their training and decision making. He is a regular speaker and workshop presenter at ACEM conferences, runs an exam course that focuses on non-technical skills and mental state prep. He is also an executive coach. Jules read “Compassionomics” several years ago and this completely changed how he viewed his work. Since then he has become an advocate for promoting a focus on compassion in the work place and at a College level. When not working he relaxes by playing poker (quite successfully) and has found that there is very little in life that can’t be improved with a fine whisky! Qualifications: FACEM, MBB, DTM&H, MRCP.
