Dr Alexandra Muthu is an Occupational & Environmental Physician who has been passionate about improving doctor wellbeing since she was a med student. She is an advocate and ally, focused on improving worker wellbeing through both organisational strategy and targeted initiatives. Her expertise spans clinical, academic, regulatory, governance, research, and lived experience.

She is the Aotearoa New Zealand representative on the Doctors Health Alliance through her role as a Trustee for Doctors Health Aotearoa. Alexandra is an elected member of the Medical Council of New Zealand and serves on its Health Committee; Health NZ’s Interim National Clinical Lead Occupational Health; and Chair of the RACP Healthcare Worker Safety, Health & Wellbeing Working Group. Although she has particular expertise in healthcare worker health and wellbeing, through her private practice, she provides advisory and clinical services across diverse industries (e.g. oil & gas, aluminium manufacturing, zoo and veterinarian, transportation).

A past AFOEM RACP Councillor, NZ Chair, Deputy Director of Training, and Education Committee member, Alexandra was awarded the 2025 Presidents Award for Policy and Advocacy for her work on healthcare worker and medical student wellbeing and dust diseases. She has led advocacy and strategy on OEM training and education, consumer and patient experience, neurodiversity, menopause, addiction and mental health, pandemic response, psychosocial safety, and safe work design. She was awarded the 2024 AFOEM Foundation Research Development Grant for her research into Doctor Wellbeing in Aotearoa.

Dr Muthu holds qualifications in public health, medical administration, addiction medicine, organisational wellbeing, impairment assessment, vocational rehabilitation, and aviation medicine. She is a graduate of the Stanford Medicine Chief Wellness Officer course, and has been a visiting Fellow at Mayo Clinic, including their world leading Physician Health Program, Occupational Medicine, Occupational Health, and Work rehab programs. She is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors and certified Medical Review Officer for workplace alcohol and drugs.

Alexandra has been invited to speak in a plenary panel on promoting great medical culture, and chair an abstract session.
